Story
About Shmulis
The name for the 1m tall statue comes from the Latvian word shmulis (shmoo-liss), which means “a messy, untidy, or dirty person”. The inspiration came from a failed attempt at spray painting the miniature model, which resulted in a messy paint job (as you can see in this photo).
This project took a lot of time, effort, and material to complete. The model was sliced into several parts, printed, and then glued together to form the final figure. The final product is a 1-meter-tall statue that weighs 10.6 kg (23.4 lb) and is finished with white acrylic paint.
From this project, I have learned that post-processing is just as important as designing and printing. One can think that once the print is done, the work is also done. But that was not the case. I spent so much time sanding that it became my only free-time activity during the summer.
