EdgeLimits

History / 01

Origin of the name

New Year’s Eve 2019, and it was time for a resolution. Mine was a place to store and share my projects, one I own and control. So social media was out (and still is).

But what to call it? In real life I go by my Latvian name, Edgars. I was aiming for an English-speaking audience (and a place to practise my third second language skills), so I was sure that the first part of the name should be Edge. Sorry, not sorry David Howell Evan, my alias comes from my name, and not from your guitar playing (but you rock!).

I was for a .com domain hunt, so it had to be something unique, easy to remember, and available. At the time, I was playing a lot of EVE Online as EdgeLimitless, where the wordplay fit the theme of the game, but it was way too long for a domain name. So I shortened it to EdgeLimits. The domain was free, this website was born on January 1, 2020.

Creative Space / 02

Where the magic happens

One desk is for working with the head, the other one with the hands. Behind every screen sits The Temple of Edge (that is not visible in the photos below). My workspace motto is “clean desk, clear mind”, but I also want the space to feel creative and inspiring, so there are toys and gadgets around. That’s why it’s not an office, it’s a creative space.

The desk: a landscape and a portrait monitor between two studio monitors, with a boom-arm microphone on the left

The whole room: the desk by the window and the workbench with its pegboard along the right wall

  • Flash game - Rubik’s Cube puzzle, my first game development gig (2007).
  • 3D portfolio website - Myst-inspired portfolio with content unlocked by puzzles (2007).

And some other projects that I have not written about yet, such as: ETL Data Pipeline for scouting market opportunities in EVE Online, HealthTech Nutrition & Fitness App, Real-time behaviour tracking for PPC campaigns, Custom MVC framework for legal signup forms, Website builder for rolling out localised company sites and sales channels, and IT infrastructure and SIP telephony for five overseas offices (my first-ever business trip was to the Seychelles - spoiled for life).
