How Edgeton came to be
It was Christmas holiday week, and I needed a new project to work on. The inspiration came from my better half. She said: there must be a chess set in every home.
Since there wasn’t one in ours, I decided to make one.
The reference was never in question. I really like the Staunton style. It is rounded, simple, elegant, and timeless. It is a “jag!” (short for Jaguar, the car) in the world of chess pieces.
So I wanted to make a Staunton-inspired set that was easy to 3D print, and that would be a joy to play with. For me it was also super important that they don’t feel cheap, that they have a premium feel.
I guess there is no need to explain how the name came to be, but just in case: Edge + Staunton = Edgeton.
The final product
32 pieces in PLA, painted, with a steel nut sunk into every base. The nut is the whole trick: glossy paint gives the touch, the metal gives the weight, and together they’re giving the pieces a premium feel.
The pieces are designed to be easy to print, only the knight piece requires one support, and the rest are support-free.
